The 33rd anniversary of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) was colourfully celebrated 18th and 19th February in Dedebit and Shire, Tigray region. The locations for this year's celebrations symbolized the importance of Dedebit where the TPLF was originally founded in 1974 and from where TPLF started its struggle against the Dergue-regime, and Shire where important breakthroughs in the struggle against the Dergue were achieved. However the 33rd anniversary was celebrated in a forward looking mood. Prime Minister Meles Zenawi emphasized, in adressing the anniversary participants, that the TPLF should not anymore dwell by history but be forwardlooking and aim for economic and social development.

Party members as well as guests from the other members of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), academic institutions and the diplomatic community were present during the anniversary which also included public discussions, a fair and cultural arrangements. Ambassador Jens-Petter Kjemprud attended one day of the anniversary.
