Encouraging results in fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

02/07/2008 :: A report published last week in Addis Ababa shows very encouraging results in the fight against Harmful Traditional Practices (HTP) in Ethiopia and against FGM in particular. The prevalence of FGM has, according to the survey, decreased from 73% in 1997 to 56% in 2007 in the general population.The most substantial decrease has been found in Tigray where prevalence has been reduced by more than 53%; from 48.1% to 21.2%. Substantial reduction of more than 20% is also registered in Southern Nations (SNNPR), Oromia, Addis Ababa and Amhara-regions. Among the Gidole-people in Southern Nations region the practice has been totally eradicated according to the survey. + More

The re-erection of the Aksum Obelisk

01/07/2008 :: Four years ago, the Italian government signed an agreement with the Ethiopia for return of the Aksum obelisk. The obelisk has been in Rome since 1937. The funeral stele, weighing 160 tonnes and standing 24 meters high, is around 1,700 years old and has become a symbol of Ethiopian people’s identity. + More

World Refugee Day in Khebribeyah in Somali region, Ethiopia

23/06/2008 :: Providing protection for refugees today is vastly more challenging than when UNHCR began work in 1951, UN Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Gueterres said marking World Refugee Day Friday 20 June i Dadaab camp for Somali refugees in Kenya. Refugees flee conflict in their home countries. "Conflict today may be motivated by politics, but looking deeper it can also be about poverty, bad governance or climate change leading to competition for scarce resources" said Gueteres. Of the total number of 11.4 million refugees worldwide Somalis fleeing the conflict in their own country are the fifth largest group. + More
