Norway to support Sustainable Land Management in Ethiopia

08.12.2006 // Norway has decided to support efforts by the Ethiopian Government to address the escalating land degradation in the country. The support will be directed to the MERET-programme for Sustainable Land Management, and Norway consider this support to be an integral part of its role as chef de file for the United Nations Convention on Desertification (UNCCD). For 2006, the programme will receive 13,5 million Norwegian Kroner, or apx. 2,2 million USD.

The support will be channeled via the World Food Programme, who acts as technical advisors to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MoARD).

The Norwegian Government is seriously concerned with the threat escalating environmental land degradation in Ethiopia poses for the overall food security situation in the country, says the Norwegian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Mr. Jens-Petter Kjemprud in a comment, - and the issue of food security needs to be adressed on several fronts. – Desertification in its broadest sense is undermining other efforts to improve the food production of Ethiopia.

The Norwegian Government has put the environment on top of its agenda for development cooperation, and the Norwegian Embassy in Ethiopia will  contribute to coalition building, project support and dialogue in the coming years.
