Norway attends IGAD Council of Ministers meeting in Djibouti

Ethiopian Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin attended the IGAD Council of Minsters Meeting.

10.12.2009 // IGAD held its 33rd Council of Ministers meeting in Djibouti 7 and 8 December. Foreign Ministers of Djibouti, Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia as well as the deputy minister of Uganda participated as well as a Sudanese delegation. The revitalisation of the organisation as well as subregional issues were discussed. See www.igad.org

IGADs minimum economic integration strategy and new peace and security strategy were discussed. The Ministers asked the Secretariat to refine the strategies and revert to an extraordinary Council of Ministers within three months.

Somalia was discussed in depth and the TfG deputy prime minister presented a budget for the TfG, which was well received by the IGAD member countries as well as its partners. Both US ass. secretary of State Carl Wycoff and Norwegian ambassador Jens-Petter Kjemprud lauded this development.

Based on the deliberations on Somalia and the presentation of the Eritrean-Djibouti conflict, the Council passed a strong Communiqué urging the UN Security Council to impose sanctions on Eritrea.
