The UNICEF objective is to reduce morbidity and mortality in children under 5 by providing quick response to emergency needs. In order to achieve this objective, UNICEF will increase its contigency stock by 54 tons of High Energy Biscuits (BP5) which will be enough to feed 7,236 children for a period of one month.
The 54 metric tons of BP5 high-energy biscuits aims to provide assistance to needy areas, as they are identified. As one metric ton of BP5 biscuits feed 134 children for one month, the 54 metric tons to be procured with this contribution will cover either 7,236 children for a month or 904 children for 8 months. The procurement, pre-positioning and distribution of these biscuits will be monitored so as to avoid wastage or expiry.
UNICEF aims to distribute the BP5 through the NGOs working in the respective zones, based on agreements to be made between UNICEF, DPPC and the NGOs. Transportation of the BP5 biscuits from Addis Ababa to needy areas will be carried out by UNICEF.
The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased to announce its contribution to the proposal with a grant value of NOK 1 838 500.
