Honey from Tigray-white and sweet

17.03.2010 // In Tigrinya, there is a sying that goes “Kab me’ar zete’ame”. It means “sweeter than honey”, and after tasting white honey from Tigray, one must assume that what the saying refers to is very sweet indeed!

Ethiopia is famous for its honey in general. In the Northern province of Tigray, a special type of honey is produced, white in colour, naturally sweet in taste, because the bees are feasting on a number of wild flowers. A number of areas is famous for its white honey, like Wukro, Hagereselam and Abi Adi. When buying honey in Hagereselam, one has to pay nearly 150 Ethiopian Birr for 1 kg. This is fairly expensive, but worth its weight in sweetness!

The Relief Association of Tigray (REST) runs capacity-building and support-programmes for local beekeepers, both in terms of the beekeeping itself, as well as how to form associations for strengthening the business. .  En route from Abi Adi to Adwa, staff from the Embassy of Norway visited a beekeeping site, where about thirty beehives can produce between 25 and 40 kg each. Two representatives of the local beekeepers association told the embassy that they were paid 50 to 55 birr per kilo of honey. However, production has been low the last months, due to the dry conditions in the area.
