The document, presenting revised requirements for humanitarian aid for the last part of 2009, is based on cooperation between the Ethiopian government and its humanitarian partners. The findings are based on an evaluation done in June/July 2009 and subsequent monitoring results and indicates a rise from 4.9 million beneficiaries in January 2009, 5.3 million in May to 6.2 million beneficiaries for the last part of 2009. 29 percent of the beneficiaries reside in the Somaliregion, 22 percent in Oromia, 17 percent in SNNPR, 16 percent in Amhara and 12 percent in Tigray.
- The severe impacts of food insecurity the last years, combined with drought, increased food prices, a shortfall of international support and access to food aid together with weak performance of rain have created a fragile situation in many parts of Ethiopia, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Mitiku Kassa said in his opening statement.
The Ethiopian government strongly appealed to international partners for urgent financial support. As far as possible the government will continue food distribution in cooperation with its partners, however depending on international support.
Due to the weak performance of the meher rain season an assessment has been conducted to be better prepared for the humanitarian needs for the first part of 2010. The findings will be published in mid-November.
As a response to the appeal, Norway has granted an immediate allocation of 8 million NOK, about 16 million ETB. The sum will be divided between UNOCHAs Humanitarian Response Fund and the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation.
