More members for Construction Federation with Norwegian support

Last updated: 23.08.2010 // The Ethiopian Construction Industry Federation has about 32 000 members. Lately, more than 900 workers in four construction companies have organised themselves and become part of the federation, because of training and funding received from their Norwegian colleagues with the Norwegian Construction Industry Federation.

-This is good news, says Mr.Lars Mamen of the local labour union Byggfag Drammen/ Bærum in Norway. They have been working with their Ethiopian counterparts for the last two years in an experience-sharing project. Funding is one aspect of the partnership, and this has given the Ethiopian workers more resources to go out and actively recruit colleagues in various construction companies. Training on how to do recruitment has also been a part of the cooperation.

On the 4th of August, the Ethiopian Construction Industry Federation held its 29th regular session in Addis Abeba, and during the meeting, Federation President Zegeye Hailesilasie highlighted the cooperation with the Norwegian federation when it came to raising awareness of workers and building their capacity.

-One of the most important issues we are working on through the experience-sharing is to secure collective agreements for our members in terms of wages, says Zegeye.
