The EPG sub group (which also includes participation from a number of the other EPG members and the Development Assistance Group - DAG) meets regularly to discuss best how to support the Government's efforts in the democracy, good governance, human rights area. "As Embassies we would like to make ourselves available and contribute in a positive way to the preparations for the upcoming national elections in Etiopia in 2011. I would not like to overstate the importance of our role, but by sharing our national experiences, making international experiences and advice available and offering assistance where it is welcome, the group hopes that it can contribute to successful preparations and peaceful conduct of the elections" says ambassador Kjemprud.
Holding regular multiparty elections has only been a feature of Ethiopian politics since 1991. " Participating in elections puts demands on all parties to the elections and a culture of democracy has to be nurtured and developed in all political parties, the electorate and the bodies responsible for conducting the elections alike. The preparations for the 2010 elections include numerous positive developments from the Government, including the new law which ensures party financing, as well as inter party dialogue on a Code of Conduct for the elections" says the ambassador.
"However democracy is not only about holding regular elections, but includes a broader scope of individual and group rights, political as well as social rights. It is crucial to take all this issues into account" says ambassador Kjemprud and adds that the way forward depends on the clear ownership of the Ethiopian institutions and people and dialogue among all actors in the political landscape. EPG and other can but support these processes.
