African High Level Panel On Climate Change

10.11.2009 // From 19-23 October 150 African experts met in Addis Ababa to discuss an African Common Position for the COP-15 meeting in Copenhagen in December and for the first time Africa published a common climate strategy and positions. Norwegian Ambassador for Climate Change Ole Kristian Holthe and Silje Vikøy from the Embassy participated.

African environmental ministers from AMCEN (African Ministerial Conference on Environment), African delegates, environmental ministers and climate experts met together with representatives  for FN-agencies, the World Bank and NGOs, all together around 300 participants. Norway, Denmark and UK were represented as donor countries. The high-level meeting was hosted by UN Economic Commission for Africa on behalf of their partners AU/Nepad and African Development Bank.

- The meeting was a successful opportunity to update and strengthen the African Common Position before the Barcelona Climate Change talks (2-6 November, ongoing) and the COP-15 in Copenhagen in December, Climate Ambassador Ole Kristian Holthe said. In addition to this, the participants worked on developing an African framework for climate adaptation, including ClimDev-Africa and African Climate Policy Center.

At the meeting Norway was praised for taking responsibility and leadership in CO2-reductions.
