Norwegian students of interculturalism in Ethiopia

Last updated: 24.02.2010 // Students of intercultural understanding from NLA University College in Bergen, Norway are on a field trip in Ethiopia and Kenya. In Addis Ababa they have received lectures and attended events on relations between Christianity and Islam.

For about ten years, students from NLA have been coming to Ethiopia for fieldwork. “The bachelor’s degree programme in intercultural understanding has four geographical focus areas; East Africa, Latin America, East Asia and Norway” explains Associate Professor Terje Østebø. A group of 25 students, supervised by himself and May-Britt Vegge, is travelling in Ethiopia and Kenya for a total of five weeks.

In Addis Ababa the students were lectured by professors from Addis Ababa University, attended an event where two Ethiopians, a Christian and a Muslim, exchanged views, and visited institutions such as the New Life Community School. This week they are doing fieldwork in Hawassa for projects on topics such as youth culture, HIV and Aids, education, and human rights. Their two weeks in Ethiopia end with a visit to Langano before they depart for Kenya.
