Speaking at the launch, Mr. Rolf Ree, Deputy Head of Mission, Norway Embassy said that the establishment of the Alumni Association will further strengthen the existing collaborative programs between Norway and Ethiopia, and specifically will enhance partnership among institutions of higher learning of Norway and Ethiopia. Dr. Admasu Tsegaye, President of Hawassa University and Dr. Kindeya Gebrehiwot, Vice-President of Mekelle University also appreciated the importance of the association.
During the launching, an executive committee was elected to serve for the first term. Dr Ayele Taye will serve the Association as President.
The Universities of Hawassa and Mekelle worked together in facilitating the launching of the Alumni Association as part of the Hawassa-Mekele-University of Life Sciences(Norway) Institutional Cooperation program that the Embassy supports.
Norway`s support to Ethiopia’s efforts towards poverty alleviation has to a noticeable extent focused on capacity building, particularly on higher level education and research. In addition to the collaborative programs between Norwegian and Ethiopian institutions of higher learning and research, Norway receives several Ethiopian students every year, mainly under full scholarship programs. This year 95 students have been granted visa (18 NOMA students, 53 Quota students, 16 Self financing students and 8 students financed by others organization).
