Ethiopian Trade Unionists visit Norway

15.09.2009 // The President and the Secretary General of the Ethiopian Construction Workers Union (Ethiopian Industrial Federation of Construction, Wood, Metal, Cement and other Trade Unions) visited cooperating trade unions in Norway late August. President Zegeye H/Selassie described the visit as extremely useful.

The visit to Norway came about as a result of an ongoing cooperation programme between the construction workers in the two countries. Local unions (in Fellesforbundet) in Drammen and Bærum initiated the cooperation about 1 1/2 years ago which is now also supported by the national union and the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO). The cooperation should help enhancing organisation skills among the Ethiopian construction workers as well as their recruitment. Their membership now stands at 32.000, up by 4.000 in the last 12 months.

In Norway the Ethiopians met top officials of the Norwegian federation and confederation to discuss common challenges, visited workplaces and the Norwegian Labour Inspection. Visiting trade union brothers and sisters in Drammen, future cooperation was discussed and Helge Breistein, the leader of Fellesforbundet in Drammen and Bærum, ensured the Ethiopan construction workers of continued cooperation and support.

A cultural evening was arranged at Union Scene in Drammen were the Etiopian unionists explained to local unionists about the challenges and achievements of Ethiopian construction workers.
