Norway signed agreement with AU

11.09.2009 // Norway will support AU’s liaison offices with NOK 10 million. Ambassador Jens-Petter Kjemprud and Director for AU’s Peace and Security Department (PSD) El Gassim Wane signed the agreement Tuesday.

- We are very happy to support the AU liaison offices and the important job they are doing for the organization with their presence across Africa, said ambassador Kjemprud when signing the agreement in the AU headquarter, Tuesday afternoon.

- We are very grateful for this – running all our liaison offices would have been difficult without support like this, said Director El Gassim Wane in AU’s Peace and Security Department. The agreement is a part of a joint-agreement including Denmark, Sweden and the UK. This joint-agreement will improve the coordination of the support, including a joint reporting mechanism. The agreement will strengthen AU’s liaison offices with necessary equipment and personnel.

AU has today liaison offices in ten African countries including Liberia, the Comoros, Burundi, DR Congo, Chad, Western Sahara and in Khartoum, Sudan. The organization is also planning to open a new liaison office in Juba, Sudan. The liaison offices are important to promote and secure peace and security in the region. The liaison offices are following up on peace agreements and reports back to AU’s Peace and Security Department on the development in their responsible areas. The liaison offices makes it easier to produce early warning information and strengthening the efforts to prevent conflicts from breaking out. It is two years since the embassy last signed an agreement with the AU.
