AU Peace and Security Council on Mauretania

26.03.2009 //   COMMUNIQUE OF THE 182nd MEETING OF THE PEACE AND SECURITY COUNCIL The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), at its 182nd meeting held on 24 March 2009, discussed the modalities for the implementation of the communiqué adopted at its 168th meeting held on 5 February 2009, on the situation in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, and took the following decision:

 

Council,

1.

Takes note of the briefing by the Commission and welcomes the efforts being

deployed within the framework of the implementation of the Communiqué of its 168

th

meeting;

2.

Reaffirms its commitment to the relevant provisions of the Constitutive Act, the

Protocol Relating to the Establishment of the PSC, the Algiers Decision of 1999 and the

Lomé Declaration of 2000 on Unconstitutional Changes of Government, as recalled by

the Assembly of the Union in decision Assembly/AU/Dec.222 adopted at its 12

th

Ordinary Session held in Addis Ababa from 1 to 4 February 2009;

3.

Recalls the relevant provisions of the Communiqués PSC/MIN/Comm.3(CLXII)

and PSC/PR/(CLXVIII) adopted at its 163

rd and 168th meetings held on 22 December

2008 and 5 February 2009, respectively;

4.

Reaffirms its decision of sanctions against all persons, both civilian and military,

whose activities are designed to maintain the unconstitutional status quo in Mauritania.

In this regard, Council decides that the sanctions shall apply to:

(a) Members of the High Council of State;

(b) Members of the Government;

(c) All other persons, both civilian and military, whose activities are designed to

maintain the unconstitutional status quo in Mauritania.

Council, in this respect,

requests the Commission of the African Union to

establish, within one month from this date, a detailed list of the above categories of

persons;

5.

Decides to remain seized of the matter.
