NUPI hosted the Training and Rostering Community Roundtable on the UN Review of Civilian Capacities in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 29 June 2010. In cooperation with the United Nations Peacebuilding Support Office, the roundtable provided an opportunity to have an early discussion on ways in which the international peacekeeping and peacebuilding training and rostering community can support the UN review of civilian capacities.
The roundtable was attended by representatives from the international training and rostering community, as well as representatives from the United Nations and the African Union. Minister Counsellor Rolf Ree hosted a reception for the roundtable participants at the Norwegian Ambassador’s Residence.
The following day, an Africa Experts Workshop on “The Civilian Contribution to Peace Operations: Assessing Progress and Identifying the Gaps” was held at the same venue. The workshop was hosted by ACCORD, SIPRI (the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute), and ROP (Réseau francophone de recherche sur les opérations de paix) with support from the Canadian and Norwegian governments. The aim of the workshop was to facilitate dialogue among key actors in Africa to develop more effective policies as well as to share best practices and lessons learned on improving civilian capacities for peace and stability operations.
