Norway signs agreement streamlining budget support to UNECA

Last updated: 13.07.2010 // Monday 12th July 2010, Norway signed a joint financing agreement with United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Abeba, making new support more comprehensive and programme related than previous financing agreements.

The new agreement makes reporting requirements less rigid, and is more similar to the way Norway and other countries support UN in Geneva, Vienna and New York. Payment will be made once a year, with more freedom for UNECA to re-allocate funds. Reporting is only required once a year in the new agreement format, which differs from the current bilateral “project support” approach followed when support to UNECA is given.

“The agreement is an aknowldgement of UNECA as a successful and well operating UN-agency, thus deserving support along the lines other UN-agencies are receiving, says Minister Counselor Rolf Ree, who signed the agreement on behalf of Norway together with the Ambassadors of Denmark, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Norway aims to support UNECA with approximately 20 million NOK in the areas of climate change, gender and govbernance, all on the basis of the programmes in the UNECA three year business plan
