On July 12th and 13th, Prime Ministers Meles Zenawi and Jens Stoltenberg chaired the UN High-Level Forum in New York The panel is seeking ways to fulfil a U.N. climate summit's pledge in Copenhagen last December-and has been meeting this week to devise ways to set up a $30 billion annual fund by 2012 that would increase to $100 billion a year by 2020. Monday 12th July 2010, Norway signed a joint financing agreement with United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) in Addis Abeba, making new support more comprehensive and programme related than previous financing agreements. Read more

On 29 and 30 June, a roundtable and a workshop on civilian contributions to peace operations were held at the UN Conference Centre in Addis Ababa. The events were funded by Norway through the Norwegian Institute for International Affairs (NUPI) and the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD). Read more

How to build strategies for protection of civilians as part of peacekeeping operations? On 31 May to 1 June a workshop aimed at developing a common framework for mission-wide protection of civilians strategies was organised in Addis Ababa. The workshop was co-hosted by the Norwegian Institute for International Affairs and funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Read more

Prime Ministers Meles Zenawi and Jens Stoltenberg are members of the UN High-Level Advisory Group on Climate Change Financing. After the group’s first meeting in London recently, Meles Zenawi reported that they have identified various financial sources to help developing countries combat climate change. Read more

The Norwegian international public health specialist Tore Godal visited Addis Ababa this week to mark the 40th anniversary of the Armauer Hansen Research Institute and to meet with Ethiopian Health Minister Tewodros Adhanom, the AU and the UN on the Millennium Development Goals. Read more

The Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and his Norwegian counterpart, Jens Stoltenberg, will both be members of a new United Nations high-level Advisory Group on Climate Change Financing announced UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday. Read more

In contrast to previous years, the World Bank has launched a consultative process during the early stages of work on its 2011 World Development Report. Representative from more than 40 countries and international organizations held a short extraordinary meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Speakers particularly emphasized the need for immediate support to the Somali Government and AMISOM. Read more

Norway yesterday joined the group of partners organized in the Pooled Fund Partners with the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). The partners have a Joint Financial Agreement to fund the extrabudgetary requirements of ECA. Ambassador Kjemprud attended the Joint Performance Review. Read more
