Norway signs agreement with ENTRO

Last updated: 08.12.2009 // On Monday Norway signed a bilateral agreement with the Eastern Nile Technical Regional Office (ENTRO) to support Feasibility Studies of hydropower development in the Blue Nile Sub basin. Six million NOK, which will be disbursed between 2009-2012, is earmarked for the technical support to ENTRO to facilitate consultation and information sharing regarding the Feasibility Studies of Mandaya and Beko Abo Multipurpose Projects.

By financing ENTRO, Norway supports the Eastern Nile countries (Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan) in developing and making use of the Blue Nile water resources in a equitable and sustainable manner. ENTRO, working as a regional facilitator and coordinator, plays an important role for the success of the Mandaya and Beko Abo Multipurpose Projects. Strengthening the technical and administrative capacity of ENTRO will increase regional cooperation for mutual benefit and focus on social and environmental consequences of the multipurpose projects.

The financing is based on a request from Ethiopia and the Eastern Nile countries as part of the Joint Multipurpose Program of the Nile.

On 30 November a bilateral agreement was signed between Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the Ethiopian Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MoFED) regarding Feasibility Studies of Mandaya and Beko-Abo. The agreement for technical support to ENTRO aims at building capacity and cooperation to support these studies.

ENTRO is the executive arm of the Eastern Nile Subsidiary Action Program (ENSAP).
