A seminar on women’s rights and gender equality for Norwegian Embassies handling development cooperation was held in Lilongwe, Malawi 31 May – 1 June 2010 organised by Norad, MFA and the Norwegian Embassy in Lilongwe. Ashenafi Gizaw represented the Embassy in Addis Ababa. It brought together close to thirty participants from embassies, Norad and MFA.

Most agriculture in Afar relies on water irrigated from rivers. Where this is not possible vegetation cover and grazing opportunities can be enhanced through soil and water conservation practices. Several local organisations receive Norwegian support through the UNCCD project of the Development Fund to promote water conservation and improve irrigation efficiency.

With Norwegian support, local organisations are establishing community cooperatives in Afar. The cooperatives engage in marketing of pastoral products and small scale trading amongst other things. These activities, forming part of the UNCCD programme of the Development Fund, introduce alternative livelihood strategies in pastoralist areas and facilitate local business development.
