The Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation has launched its evaluation of Norwegian Development Cooperation in 2009. One of the components looked at by the evaluation is “Norwegian support to the protection of Cultural Heritage”, where Norwegian support to the restoration of Fasiledes Bath in Gonder, Ethiopia is regarded as successful.

With Norwegian support, local organisations are establishing community cooperatives in Afar. The cooperatives engage in marketing of pastoral products and small scale trading amongst other things. These activities, forming part of the UNCCD programme of the Development Fund, introduce alternative livelihood strategies in pastoralist areas and facilitate local business development.

Norway is supporting projects set to increase water security for pastoralists in Afar. Together with the Development Fund, the Embassy visited sites where the organisation FARM Africa is constructing cisterns for rainwater harvesting as well as supporting agricultural development.
