The Peace and Security Council (PSC) is the organ of the African Union (AU) in charge of enforcing union decisions. The PSC is a vital part of the international security architecture with respect to African conflicts with a division of labour and close cooperation existing among the United Nations Security Council, the PSC and African Regional Economic Communities (RECs). All 15 members were up for replacement or re-election at the 16th ordinary session of the AU Executive Council in January 2010. The new members take up their seats on 1 April.
Five Member States, one from each region, were elected for a three-year term:
1. Equatorial Guinea (Central Region)
2. Kenya (Eastern Region)
3. Libya (Northern Region)
4. Zimbabwe (Southern Region)
5. Nigeria (Western Region)
Ten Member States were elected for a two-year term:
Central Region:

Eastern Region:
3. Djibouti
4. Rwanda
Northern Region:
5. Mauritania
Southern Region:
6. Namibia
7. South Africa
Western Region:
8. Benin
9. Côte d'Ivoire
