AU High Level Panel on Darfur established. Inaugural meeting held i Addis Ababa

The AU High Level Panel on Darfur (AUPD) held its inaugural meeting in Addis Ababa last week under the chairmanship of former South African president Thabo Mbeki. Former presidents Abdusalami Abubakar of Nigeria, Pierre Buyoya of Burundi and a number of African notabilities are in the panel.
The panel has a mandate to examine the situation in Darfur in depth and to submit recommendations on how best the issues of accountability and combating impunity, on the one hand, peace, healing and reconcilliation, on the other, could be effectively and comprehensively adressed.
